Hadith No.2: The Virtues of Wudhu, Sins Removed Through Purification

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

When a Muslim, or believer, performs Wudu', washing his face, every evil that he looked at with his eyes leaves with the water (or last drop of it)

[Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 2]

Explanation

Wudu is far more than a means of physical cleanliness. Through it, Allah سبحانه وتعالى grants the believer an opportunity to purify not only his body but also his sins. In this beautiful hadith, the Prophet ﷺ teaches us that every limb washed during Wudu is cleansed of the sins committed by it.

As the believer washes his face, the sins committed by his eyes depart with the water. In the complete narration, the Prophet ﷺ mentions that the sins committed by the hands and feet are likewise forgiven as they are washed. By the end of his Wudu, the believer emerges purified by the mercy of Allah.

This hadith reminds us that Islam connects outward actions with inward purification. A simple act that many Muslims perform several times each day becomes a means of drawing closer to Allah and seeking His forgiveness.

Allah سبحانه وتعالى says:

“Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.”

[Qur’an 2:222]

Every time a Muslim stands to perform Wudu, he should remember that he is preparing himself not only for prayer but also for the forgiveness and mercy of his Lord.

The Blessings of Wudu

Wudu carries many blessings and virtues that extend beyond physical purification. Among them are:

  • Sins are forgiven and washed away.
  • The believer prepares himself for prayer.
  • Wudu increases spiritual purity.
  • It is a means of earning Allah’s love.
  • It distinguishes the followers of the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of Judgment.
  • It serves as a reminder to avoid sins.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“My nation will be called on the Day of Resurrection with bright faces, hands, and feet from the traces of Wudu.”

[Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim]

Lessons From This Hadith

This hadith teaches us to be mindful of how we use our eyes, ears, hands, and feet. Since sins can be committed through our limbs, believers should strive to protect them from what displeases Allah.

It also reminds us not to rush through Wudu or treat it as a mere routine. Rather, every drop of water should remind us of Allah’s mercy and our constant need for His forgiveness.

The Salaf valued acts of worship that many people overlook, understanding that even simple deeds, when performed sincerely, carry immense rewards.

Conclusion

The Prophet ﷺ teaches us that Wudu is a tremendous blessing from Allah. It cleanses the body, prepares the believer for prayer, and wipes away sins committed throughout the day.

The next time you perform Wudu, remember that each limb you wash is being purified by the mercy of Allah سبحانه وتعالى. Perform it with care, gratitude, and hope in His forgiveness.
